L’un n’est pas quelque chose, pas un étant. Les premières lignes du traité de Plotin De l’un l’indiquent clairement: “C’est par l’un que tous les étants sont des étants” (En. VI,9 [9], l.l). Pourquoi ne peut-on pas dire de l’un qu’il est quelque chose, un étant? “L’un est premier à tous égards, mais l’Intelligence, les idées et l’étant ne sont pas premiers” (ib. 2,30; c’est moi qui souligne). Le caractère dérivé de l’étant résulte de sa principale qualité, l’intelligibilité. Tout ce qui est ou existe peut être compris. Mais l’un, qui nous est ce qu’il y a de plus intime, n’en échappe pas moins à notre compréhension. Il n’est donc pas étant. Inversement, l’étant est secondaire puisqu’il est du même rang que l’Intelligence (noûs) et les idées.

En soutenant ainsi l’incognoscibilité et le non-être (ib. 3,39) de l’un, l’hénologie retourne Platon contre lui-même. En accord avec Platon, Plotin maintient qu’être, c’est être intelligible. Mais à l’encontre de Platon, il découvre que, quand nous parlons de ce qui est intelligible, nous parlons toujours de choses multiples, ne serait-ce que de la dualité connaissant/connu. Or, rien de ce qui implique l’altérité — ni, à plus forte raison, la multiplicité — ne peut être premier. L’Intelligence et l’étant seront des dérivés parce que intrinsèquement multiples. Voilà pourquoi, dans l’univers plotinien, aucun étant ne peut prétendre au [187] rang suprême. Si c’est “par l’un” que tous les étants sont des étants, il ne figurera pas parmi eux.

Sans contenu, ne devant rien à la mécanique maximisatrice, il n’est donc pas une thèse. Il centre plutôt toutes choses: centrage dans lequel on reconnaît la pure natalité. Centrer, c’est moins qu’être. L’Intelligence, elle, la deuxième hypostase, donne aux étants leur être (plus précisément, pour emprunter à Heidegger, leur ‘étance’). Mais l’un donne une simple direction. La tournure ‘être suprême’ revient donc à un non-sens et la tournure “étant suprême” — parfaitement adéquate pour les métaphysiques maximisatrices du Bien, du Beau et du Vrai — est ici une contradiction dans les termes.

Seule une lecture précipitée verra dans les déclarations d’incognoscibilité et de non-être un discours négatif sur un Premier divin, une théologie négative dans la lignée de Philon. Telle est pourtant l’opinion reçue concernant les néoplatoniciens: puisque l’un transcende l’Intelligence et les étants, il est ‘au-dessus’ d’eux, plus intelligent, plus étant qu’eux. Sa simplicité le rend inconnaissable pour nous, mais suprême envers l’autre que lui. De la distinction entre l’un et l’étant intelligible résultent certaines équations conceptuelles dont la liste est longue dans le corpus néoplatonicien, qu’il soit chrétien ou non-chrétien: être un, c’est être inconcevablement actuel, spirituel, intelligent, permanent, puissant, efficient, étemel, étant... L’hénologie serait une métaphysique de la transcendance radicale, mais l’un resterait bel et bien quelque chose. Il serait seulement hors de portée d’intellection: être au-delà de l’être, esprit au-delà de l’esprit, cause au-delà des causes. Malgré ses négations, pareille exaltation reste solidement onto-théologique, un discours sur l’être en tant que tel, qui dérive d’un étant sa légitimation; d’un étant inaccessible, mais fondateur néanmoins: suprême, divin.

Or, en distinguant entre l’un et l’être, Plotin déjoue la collusion entre la fonction de focale dernière et l’office de fondement. Il recouvre par là un trait de l’être, perdu sous la prédominance de l’étiologie — du discours sur les causes — depuis Platon. Le participe français ‘étant’, tout comme le participe grec ‘on’, recèle une ambiguité. Le participe est la forme grammaticale qui ‘participe’ à la fois du nom et du verbe. On, ou plus anciennement eon, est ainsi un concept essentiellement équivoque. De cette équivocité Heidegger écrit: “On dit ‘étant’ au sens de: être un étant; mais en même temps, on dit un étant qui est Dans la dualité de la signification verbale de on se cache la différence entre ‘être’ et ‘l’étant’.” Chez Plotin, l’on de la deuxième hypostase a une signification nominale: l’étance. De là son caractère dérivé. Lui ‘est’ par excellence. Dans l’Intelligence subsistante, l’étance coïncide avec l’étant, en quoi elle est suprême, fondatrice, intelligible. Mais pour ces perfections mêmes, elle ne sera pas première. Vu l’ascendant ambigu du néoplatonisme sur la répétition heideggérienne de la question de l’être, il est [188] permis de penser surtout au plotinisme christianisé quand Heidegger déplore que, depuis Platon, l’identification entre l’on nominal et l’étant suprême ait obscurci la connotation verbale du participe on, donc l’être.

Chez Plotin, en tous cas, l’un et l’étance forment des strates séparées. Ils réclament donc des stratégies de pensée distinctes. Leur chorismos interdit de réduire la condition première de toutes choses à la forme nominale de l’être — à l’ousia, comme Plotin le dit encore. Sans doute, pour lui, l’on, c’est Dieu, theos (p.ex. En. IV,7 [2], 8 (3), 12). Mais l’onto-théologie de Plotin est son avant-dernier mot. La recherche du fondement n’est pas son dernier mot. Cette recherche ne constitue pas l’hénologie, le discours sur l’un. L’onto-théologie diffère de l’hénologie comme la seconde hypostase, nous, de la première, hen. Plotin a vu que tout discours qui vise à ancrer les phénomènes dans un fondement inconditionné tombe dans un cercle vicieux. Chercher la raison des étants dans un autre étant, c’est tourner en rond parmi le représentable. Il a vu, autrement dit, la différence stratégique entre une cause entitative, représentable, connaissable, et une condition non-entitative, non-représentable et seulement pensable indirectement.

À la condition qu’est l’un, il faut adresser la question du conditionnement: si ce n’est pas à la façon d’un étant fondateur, comment l’un conditionne-t-il ce qui est?

“C’est par l’un que tous les étants sont des étants.” À l’encontre des métaphysiques classiques de la forme, Plotin maintient ainsi que ce n’est pas leur forme substantielle qui fait que les étants sont des étants. Le renvoi à l’un déplace la différence par laquelle Platon et Aristote avaient isolé la substance (divine ou sensible) dans l’étant. L’un est condition, de par sa différence d’avec le fondement. Le nerf de toute hénologie est en effet la différence entre l’un et l’étant. Aussi, comme l’un est non-étant (mè on), vaudra-t-il mieux parler d’hénologie négative. Elle ne peut être que négative puisque le logos constitue les seuils entre les hypostases et occupe donc une position inférieure par rapport à l’un. En hénologie négative, la différence sépare, non pas l’étance de l’étant; mais l’un de l’étance et de l’étant conjoints.

The one is not a being, not a something. This is clearly indicated in the first lines of Plotinus’s treatise On the One: “It is due to the one that all beings are beings.” (En. VI, 9 [91, 1, 1). Why can one not say of the one that it is something, a being? “The one is in all respects first, but Intelligence, ideas and beings are not first” (ibid. 2, 30; my emphasis). The derivative status of beings follows from their chief quality, intelligibility. All that is or exists can be understood. But the one, which is what is most intimate for us, nonetheless escapes our comprehension. Hence it is not a being. Conversely, beings are secondary since they are of the same order as Intelligence (nous) and the ideas.

By thus upholding the incognizability and the non-being of the one (ibid. 3, 39), henology turns Plato against himself. Agreeing with Plato, Plotinus holds that to be is to be intelligible. But contrary to Plato, he discovers that when we speak of intelligible things we always speak of multiple things, be it only of the duality of knowing and known. Now, nothing which implies otherness — or, even more so, multiplicity — can be first. Intelligence and being will be derivative because they are intrinsically multiple. This is why, in the Plotinian universe, no being can claim supreme standing. Thus, if it is “due to the one” that all beings are beings, the one is not itself to be found among them.

The one is without content, it owes nothing to the mechanics of maximization: therefore it is not a thesis. Rather, it centers all things, a centering in which one can recognize pure natality. To be a centering is less than to be a being. Intelligence, the second hypostasis, gives beings their being (more precisely, borrowing from Heidegger, their “beingness”). But the one gives a simple direction. The expression “supreme Being” thus amounts to nonsense, and the expression “supreme being” — which is perfectly adequate for the maximizing metaphysics of the Good, the Beautiful, and the Truth — is here a contradiction in terms.

Only a hasty reading will see in the declarations concerning incognizability and non-being a negative discourse about a divine First, a negative theology in the train of Philo. Nevertheless, such is the received opinion about the Neoplatonists: Since the one transcends Intelligence and beings, it is “above” them, more intelligent, “more of a being” than them. Its simplicity makes it unknowable to us, but supreme vis-avis what is other than itself. The distinction between the one and intelligible beings results in a few conceptual equations for which one would find ample support in the Neoplatonist corpus, be it Christian or non-Christian: To be one is to be inconceivably actual, spiritual, intelligent, permanent, powerful, causative, eternal, a being.... Henology would be a metaphysics of radical transcendence, but the one would remain something after all. It would only be beyond the reach of intellection: being beyond being, mind beyond mind, cause beyond causes. Despite its negations, such an exaltation remains squarely onto-theological, a discourse about being “as such” which derives its legitimization from a being — from a being that is inaccessible, but foundational nonetheless: supreme and divine.

Yet by distinguishing between the one and being, Plotinus disrupts the collusion between the function of an ultimate focal point and the official charge of grounding. He thereby retrieves a trait of being that had been lost under the predominance of etiology — of the discourse on causes — ever since Plato. The English participle “being” and the Greek participle on harbor an ambiguity. A participle is the grammatical form that “participates” in both the noun and the verb. On, or the archaic eon, is an essentially equivocal concept. About this equivocity, Heidegger writes: “’On’ says ‘being’ in the sense of ‘to be’ a being; at the same time it names a being which is. In the duality of the participial significance of on the distinction between ‘to be’ and ‘a being’ lies concealed”. In Plotinus, the ‘on’ of the second hypostasis is meant as a noun: beingness, hence its derivative character. It “is” par excellence. In the subsisting Intelligence, beingness coincides with beings; in this it is supreme, foundational, intelligible. But due to these very perfections, it will not be first. If we consider the ambiguous pedigree of Neoplatonism given the Heideggerian repetition of the question of being, one may well think of Christianized Plotinianism when Heidegger deplores that the identification, since Plato, between the nominal on and the supreme being has obscured the verbal connotation of the participle on, and thus being.

In any case, in Plotinus the one and beingness are separate strata. Therefore they require distinct strategies of thinking. Their chorismos makes it impossible to reduce the first condition of all things to the nominal form of being — to ousia, as Plotinus also says.” For him the on assuredly is God, theos (for ex. En. IV, 7 [2], 8 (3), 12). But Plotinus’s onto-theology is his penultimate word. The search for a ground is not his last word. This search does not constitute henology, the discourse on the one. Onto-theology differs from henology as the second hypostasis, noes, does from the first, hen. Plotinus has seen that any discourse which seeks to anchor phenomena in an unconditioned foundation falls into a vicious circle. To seek the reason of beings in another being is to spin around among what is representable. In other words, he has seen the strategic difference between an entitative cause, which is representable and knowable, and a non-entitative condition, which is unrepresentable and only indirectly thinkable.

One must direct the question of conditioning to the condition which the one is: If not in the manner of a grounding being, how does the one condition what is?

”It is due to the one that all beings are beings.” Contrary to the classical metaphysics of form, Plotinus thus holds that it is not due to their substantial form that all beings are beings. The reference to the one displaces the difference by means of which Plato and Aristotle had isolated divine or sensible substance in the beings. The one is a condition by virtue of its difference with the foundation. The central nerve of all henology is, indeed, the difference between the one and beings. Thus, since the one is a non-being (me on), it would be better to speak of negative henology. It can be negative only because logos constitutes the thresholds between the hypostases and thus occupies an inferior position in relation to the one. In negative henology, the difference does not separate beingness and beings, but the one from beingness and conjoined beings.
